Live - Murray v Baghdatis

Andy Murray

Live video - BBC coverage of the French Open from Roland Garros.

LIVE TEXT COMMENTARY (all times BST)

Murray 6-2 4-2 *Baghdatis
Some top, top tennis on show out there now. Bag looks to break straight back and pushes Murray all the way. But the 23-year-old from Dunblane finds the weapons at the right time to consolidate his advantage.

From Andrew in Newcastle via text: "A few years ago we'd all be praying for cool conditions to favour the British players but does Murray's fitness, and especially that he spends winter training in serious heat, now mean the heat plays into his hands?"
Twitter
"Without the intensity Muzza is half the player but he just needs to keep a check on that temper if he wants to be a champion."
1539: A quick update on Fernando Verdasco. The seventh seed was cruising two sets up against Florent Serra and then the French crowd would have been going berserk as their man won the third 6-0. Fear not Verdasco fans, because he settled down and has just served up a few crackers to finally come through 6-2 6-2 0-6 6-4. Interesting.
Murray* 6-2 3-2 Baghdatis
"You just can't teach that," says John Lloyd on the BBC Red Button as Baghdatis wins a thrilling net exchange with a controlled volley up the line. That followed a couple of stupendous little battles which had the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd in raptures. Baghdatis saves a break point with an easy smash but wastes an number of chances to see out the game. Murray really wants to break here and he gets a second chance when Baghdatis puts a forehand into the tramlines. He's not going to let this opportunity slip and sends down an unstoppable forehand winner to break serve and he'll now serve for a 4-2 lead.

Twitter
"Murray to win this in 3.. baghdatis will wilt in heat. side bet on murray losing that hair in 5 years…"
Murray 6-2 2-2 *Baghdatis
An impressive hold from Murray, that. The Scot serve-volleys twice to go 30-0 up but he's soon reeled in by a vibrant Baghdatis. A wild Bag forehand gives Murray advantage and Britain's finest seals the game with a delicate drop shot.

Twitter
"I think Murray will win inside 26 games. He's just got too much for Baghdatis for my money."
Murray* 6-2 1-2 Baghdatis
First it was his groundstrokes, now it's his serve. Baghdatis sends down two double-faults on juice to give Murray break points but both are squandered. Bag eventually comes through when Murray nets and the Scot is VERY annoyed with himself. He then has a go at the umpire, claiming two of his energy drinks were thrown in the bin before he'd finished with them.

From Tom in Cardiff via text: "Is this an omen? I have just witnessed a particularly dramatic debate between two of my colleagues - one who is a dead ringer for Mr Murray, and the other who is a Greek national. The worrying thing is that Photios comfortably ended up the victor... Ominous?"
Murray 6-2 1-1 *Baghdatis
Where did that come from? Murray seems to fall asleep and, with it, he goes 0-40 down. One break point is saved and despite defending his heart out on the second, the Scot nets to hand back the break. As we were, then.

It's bad news for a Briton
1512: And there was me waving the Union Jack. The flap has lost its flappiness - and so has the Aussie flag for that matter - as Britain's Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr lose out in a third-set tie-break to second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic. Top effort though.
Murray* 6-2 1-0 Baghdatis
"Flirting with failure," says Mark Petchey on the BBC Red Button as the Cypriot goes for broke. It initially pays off as he scores with a couple of high-risk groundstrokes but then another erratic forehand gives Murray break point. AM goes inches long and then sees another two break points come and go. But on the fourth break point the Bag nets and Murray goes a break up.

FIRST SET:
Murray 6-2 *Baghdatis
There it is. Murray sends a forehand winner scurrying down the line to clinch the set. Dream start for the British number one.
* denotes next to serve
Murray* 5-2 Baghdatis
Suddenly the Baghdatis groundstrokes are badly malfunctioning. A couple of needless errors give Murray another break point but he puts a backhand into the tramlines. He does, though, get a second bite of the cherry and this time a thunderous backhand proves to hot for Bag to handle. Murray gets the double break and he's seriously pumped, turning to his team in the stand and letting out a huge "C'mon!"

It's good news for a Briton
1451: The Ornstein videprinter type thing of updates for your convenience: Massive shake of the Union Jack as Britain's Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski come back from a set down to beat Marco Chiudinelli and Christopher Kas 3-6 6-3 6-4. In the women's singles, Venus makes it a good day for the Williams household after a straight-sets win over 26th-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova. While Russian Anastasia Pivovarova beat China's 25th seed Zheng Jie and Anastasia (a popular name) Pavlyuchenkova saw off American Jill Craybas. Other winners include local girl Marion Bartoli, Maria Sharapova and Daniela Hantuchova.
Murray 4-2 *Baghdatis
A confident-looking Murray races into a 40-0 lead but he's then passed at the net and nets the give Bag a sniff. No drama, however. Murray gets Bag scampering around the baseline like shuttle bus before coming in to volley a winner and consolidate the break.
* denotes next to serve
Murray* 3-2 Baghdatis
"Woeful service game from Baghdatis," says John Lloyd on the BBC Red Button. Murray breaks to 15 without really doing too much at all. Who saw that coming? Bag goes long to hand AM the game and now the fourth seed is serving for a 4-2 lead.
* denotes next to serve
Murray 2-2 *Baghdatis
Murray having to fend off some real pressure from Baghdatis out there. The Cypriot probably knows he is unlikely to outlast AM in a five-setter so he's playing a full throttle. Murray is taken to deuce thanks to the most incredible sliding crosscourt forehand pass from Baghdatis, but the Scot comes through when the Bag nets.

From David S in London via text: "Why doesn't Andy wear all green kit so that he blends in with his background, making it more difficult for the 'enemy' to see him. It's called camouflage and is quite legal."
Twitter
"Murray in 4 is my call. Can't watch it because I need the boardroom wifi and there's a meeting in there. Gah. Who needs work?"
Murray* 1-2 Baghdatis
Murray takes his first point of the Bag serve but the Cypriot is timing the ball a dream and he comfortably holds to keep the pressure of his Scottish opponent, who he's beaten in both of their previous two meetings.

Twitter
"Good job it's cooled down from earlier as I reckon Baghdatis could have given Murray a good fight in the heat!"
In case you hadn't already gathered, Murray-Baghdatis is live on the BBC Red Button right now. If the Scot wins, his fourth round match will be played on Sunday and it'll be shown live on the Red Button and here Online.
Murray 1-1 *Baghdatis
A gripping game to get the juices flowing for what might just be an absolute corker of a match. A Baghdatis belts a couple of forehand winners to help engineer a break point but Murray saves it with a beautifully deft touch at the net. The Scot cannot shake off his opponent, however, and a second double-fault of the game plus a terribly over-hit drop shot do not help his cause. Eventually Baghdatis nets to hand Murray the game.
* denotes next to serve
Murray* 0-1 Baghdatis
Powerful service game from the Cypriot, who secures an impressive love hold by opening his frame and lashing a sumptuous forehand winner past Murray's defences.

1420: Before we get going, a quick mention for Venus Williams. The second seed is serving for the match against Cibulkova on Chatrier and will be followed on court by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Now to Murray...

1417: Murray and Baghdatis have been out on Court Suz Lenglen for a few minutes and they're going through a gentle warm-up. "Good luck," says Murray to his opponent after the coin toss. Nice touch from the Scot.
1415: Merci beaucoup, Sam. You all ready for Murray?
By Sam Lyon

It's good news for a Briton
1410: Now then, for the upcoming Andy Murray match I will hand you back to Dangerous David Ornstein - but before that let me tell you that Hutchins and Kerr are back on level terms with Nestor/Zimonjic having won the second set 6-4, while Venus Williams and Fernando Verdasco are in good shape too, leading by a break in the second set of their matches against Cibulkova and Serra respectively. That there ends one of BBC Sport's briefest cameos - Orno, it's back to you.
"That is Federer's 700th career match win."
1406: For those of you mulling over a step away from this commentary now that the Fed Express has sauntered casually into the next round - don't you dare. Next up on Court Suzanne Lenglen is British number one Andy Murray against Cyprus's finest Marcos Baghdatis, and it should be a cracker.
1402: By the by - Roger Federer double-faulted on the first of his match points then. Has that EVER happened before? Uncharacteristic lapse in concentration from the tennis machine - I doubt many of his future opponents in this tournament will find much hope in that, though...right?
The match is over
1400: Bish bash bosh - and that's that, done and dusted. Julian Reister has no answer to the Swiss world number one's serve and while he retires to the dressing room in the hope his eyes stop rolling around his head, Roger Federer will go and prepare for round four on the back of a 6-4 6-0 6-4 victory.
"Federer has so much variety in his play - even while he is demolishing Reister it's a joy to watch. 23 consecutive slam semi-finals and better, who is to deny him extending this run? Six years of consistent excellence across all surfaces..."
1354: As Fernando Verdasco sticks the first set against Frenchman Florent Serra in the bank 6-2, Roger Federer glides through another service game - sealed with a booming ace - to put himself within a game of the third set and the fourth round. Next up for the Swiss, barring a comeback of Lazarus-style proportions from Reister, will be Stanislas Wawrinka or Fabio Fognini.
More from BBC Sport's Piers Newbery at Roland Garros via text: "The press seats on Lenglen look straight down the court, great view of Federer in action. The man is an athlete. More exclusives to follow..."
1350: By the way, if you could all manually refresh this page the bylines will all look present and correct. If you're not particularly worried about that - and if you're not my or Orno's mother, I can't say I would blame you - sit back and worry ye not.
It's good news for a Briton
1347: A'noon folks, how goes it? I join you just as the Fed-ster backs his break with a hold of serve to deuce, he leads 4-2 in the third and is cruising into the fourth round as it stands, while I also bring news of a break for Briton Ross Hutchins and his doubles partner Jordan Kerr, they lead Nestor/Zimonjic 3-2 in the second after losing the first on a breaker. Nice.
By David Ornstein

1345: Just before I pop off for a spot of lunch and leave you in the oh so capable hands of Sam Lyon, I can tell you that Venus has eased through the first against Cibulkova and Verdasco is serving for the opener against Serra. See you in a bit.
From BBC Sport's Piers Newbery at Roland Garros via text: "Lots of feisty Brits on Court 10 as Fleming and Skupski take the second set of their doubles. Roasting hot, was enjoying it until Mark Petchey told me it's going to rain tomorrow. Zut alors." "Brit doubles guys playing well in tough matches. Fleming/Skupski win 2nd set 6-3 to level match with Chiudinelli/Kas at 1-1... Next door, Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr took Nestor/Zimonjic to 1st set TB, losing it 7-5, amazing lob from DN on the 5-5 point."
It's good news for a Briton
1336: Fleming and Skupski hit back! The Brits take the second set against Chiudinelli and Kas so they're back on level terms.
1334: Here's a bit of Nadal-Hewitt chat from my esteemed colleague Mark Ashenden: "These two have met three times at the French Open - in 2006, 2007 and 2009. As you'd probably have guessed, Rafa's won all three matches."
A bagel
1330: Anyone fancy a bagel for lunch? Defending champion Federer has just taken the second set off Reister for the loss of not a single game. "Blink and you'd have missed that," says Sam Smith on the BBC Red Button.
The match is over
1328: A few results for you to feast over. Third seed Novak Djokovic has beaten Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-4 6-4 and Lleyton Hewitt has come through a five-set epic to see off Denis Istomin 1-6 6-3 6-4 2-6 6-1. The Australian will meet second seed Rafael Nadal is round three. Tasty. And 12th seed Maria Sharapova is also into round three with a 6-3 6-3 win against Kirsten Flipkens. She'll now play Justine Henin.
Twitter
"Ross/jordan's tough game has seen six breaks in first eight games. Makes you wonder what the record in doubles is."
It's bad news for a Briton
1315: Sincerest apologies. I thought Hutchins and Kerr had won the first set but they were actually only serving for it. To compound my embarrassment, they've just lost it on a tie-break. Ornstein woe. Will you forgive me?
It's bad news for a Briton
1310: Mixed news on the Brits. Ross Hutchins and his Aussie partner Jordan Kerr have gone a set up against second seeds Nestor and Zimojic. But Fleming and Skupski have lost the opener to Chiudinelli and Kas.
Latest scores
1305: Let's go around the courts. While Fed has finally broken Reister on CPC, women's second seed Venus Williams has just got going against Cibulkova and Danni Hantuchova's gone 1-0 up on Olga Govortsova. Hewitt's a break to the good in his five-set epic against Istomin and Philly Kohlschreiber's a set and a break up on Seppi.
1300: Federer's live on the BBC Red Button as we speak. Keep the questions coming for Mark Petchey and John Lloyd. "Federer's struggling on his return, Reister looking really confident out there," says former GB Davis Cup skipper JL. "Just seen France's Camille Pin convulsed with laughter in the press room, tears streaming down her face. No idea why. I'm off outside..."
1255: The Fed Express obviously getting lots of loving on and texts - 81111 (UK) or +44 7786200666 (worldwide). He's wearing his bright blue 2010 French Open shirt, a matching bandana and spotless white shorts. Reister sporting Wimbledon-esque whites and a baseball cap to shield him from the sun. We're going with serve in the opening set.
It's good news for a Briton
1250: Get in there, Rosco. Hutchins and Kerr go a break up on second seeds Nestor and Zimonjic in the men's dubs. "Off to watch a bit of @flemskitennis @k_skupski on Court 10. 3-3 first set. Hewitt/Istomin about to go into a 5th on Court 7." "Rafa rolls he has now won 36 of 38 sets this clay season. What is the over/under on sets he will lose this French Open? Aleksander Dolgopolov with a really nice win over gonzo has one of the most interesting windups on the backhand like a baseball player. His father use to coach Medvedev."
Latest scores
1243: Fed fans, your time has come and your man has made a solid start against German qualifier Reister on CPC. He's currently pressing for a break of serve in game three. Elsewhere, Istomin remains on course for the fourth set against Hewitt so that one looks set to go the distance. And British number one doubles player Ross Hutchins and his Australian partner Jordan Kerr and 3-3 with second seeds Nestor and Zimonjic.
The match is over
1239: Justine lets out a cute little yelp of "allez" as she reels off another winner to seal victory. So Henin beats Zakopalova 6-3 6-3 to reach round three of the French Open.
1235: I do expect you to stay right here following the tennis all day. But if you fancy a peek at what's going on in my good friend Orlo is ready and waiting to guide you through proceedings.
1230: And you thought Andy Murray was the only Brit left at Roland Garros right? WRONG. Ross Hutchins is playing with Aussie Jordan Kerr in the opening round of the men's doubles. They've got a right old task on their hands though - up against second seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic. And it's Brit-overload. Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski have also started their doubles clash with Marco Chiudinelli and Christopher Kas. Will keep you posted.
1228: Zakopalova double-faults to give Henin the double-break and she's now serving for a place in round three."William in mauritius?! My heart bleeds... I'm following the updates from a office portacabin in Juba, Southern Sudan...."
Latest scores
1223: Here's how we stand. Former champion Henin and Zakopalova have resumed their rain-delayed match on CPC and the Belgian is already a break up in the second set. Marion Bartoli has beaten Olivia Sanchez so Federer will be out on Court Suz Lenglen any time now. Can't wait. Djokovic is all square with Nishikori is the third set and Hewitt is 2-1 up on Istomin but a break down in the fourth. He loves a five-setter, Lleyton. And a huge upset on Court 17 as everyone's favourite Ukrainian Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr beats 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez 6-3 6-4 6-3. Ouch.
The sun is out
1215: Roland Garros continues to be bathed in sunshine for what looks like being one of the most exciting days of the fortnight. Yesterday gave credence to the agreement that Garros should follow the lead of Wimbledon and Melbourne Park by building a retractable roof over the main court. But today we're seeing the beauty of a roofless Court Philippe Chatrier in all its glory. Good times.
Twitter
"Steady stuff from Rafa there, finishing off Zeballos in under two hours. The spectators still file into Chatrier - you've just missed Nadal."
Twitter
"Can you explain 'Nole' to me when referring to Djokovic please. I well don't get it, bruv."
It's Djokovic's nickname, bruv.

The match is over
1202: That's your lot, Horacio. World number two Rafael Nadal beats Zeballos 6-2 6-2 6-3 to reach round three of the French Open. Off comes the bandana and that's that. Next up on Court Philippe Chatrier is the brilliant Belgian Justine Henin.
Latest scores
1200: Bartoli's closing in on victory against Sanchez so Federer will be on soon. Rafa's broken Zeballos straight back and is serving for the match, while Nole's wrapped up the second set.
1155: Zeballos is getting tennis lesson? He's only gone and broken Rafa to level the third set. Closes out game eight against the world number two with a thumping forehand winner into open court. Tremendous.
Re 1105: "For some of us there is no competition, Wimbledon all the way! :-D only problem is if the TV coverage doesn't agree..."
Latest scores
1150: Japan's Nishikori breaks back in the second set against Djokovic so they're level at 4-4. Uh oh, spoke to soon. Nole's broken again for a 5-4 lead and will now serve for a two-set lead. Former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli has taken the first set of her rain-delayed match against fellow Frenchwoman Olivia Sanchez. They precede Federer and Reister on Court Suz Lenglen.
1145: "He's getting a free tennis lesson out here, Horacio Zeballos," says Sam Smith on the BBC Red Button. The Argentine is two sets and a break to against Rafa so this one'll be finished before long. Then it's time for Miss Henin and that oh-so-delicious backhand.

Nole's broken Nishikori and is about to serve for a 5-3 lead in the second and Ferrer remains on course for a straight-sets win after going a break up in the third against Malisse. Hewitt's fighting back like a wounded animal against Istomin and looks on course to level the match at 1-1, while good old Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr is serving for a two-set lead against Gonzo. Could be a massive shock on Court 17.

From William via text: "Stuck I'm my office in Mauritius - your feed is my life line, we don't have a red button or any buttons for that matter. Local TV hardly ever mentions tennis, you guys are spoilt!"

Re 1105: "Oh no, david. The question is what if Wimbledon, World cup England Match AND Doctor who overlap. Now THAT's a dilemma."
1122: After a pretty crazy start to day six, things have settled down a bit. Ferrer's serving for a two-set lead against Malisse on Court Six and Rafa's about to do likewise.
1117: So the BBC Red Button has switched to Court Philippe Chatrier, where Rafa Nadal is a set and a break up against Argentina's Zeballos, serving for a 5-2 lead in the second. These two might speak the same language but that's about all they have in common today.

1108: A nice morning's work for the women's top seed - Serena Williams beats Julia Goerges 6-1 6-1 to reach round three of the French Open. Good work, SW.
1105: Exactly a month to go until a certain footballing bonanza kicks off but the British press have still afforded French Open a fair few column inches today. I'll bring you a round-up shortly. How are you tennis lovers going to cope with the Wimbledon-World Cup overlap? Text 81111 (UK) or +44 7786200666 (worldwide) or .
1100: Plenty of you asking what time Murray will be on today so you can plot your escape routes from work. He's fourth on Court Suz Lenglen after Serena, Bartoli and Federer - so we're thinking about 1400 BST. "6-1 is score-du-jour. 6-1 Serena, 6-1 Djokovic, 6-1, Melzer, 6-1 Istomin (over Hewitt). Nadal gets a 6-2."
1052: Oh and we could have a shock out on Court 17, where 12th seed Gonzo has just gone a set down to Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. Who? Someone help me out!

"Umbrellas are up!!! (… thankfully to shade the players rather than keep the rain off...) Nice to see some sun & what an order of play…"
1047: A bit more BBC Red Button chat for y'all. The aforementioned button will switch from Serena to Rafa at the end of the Serena's match against Goerges. That shouldn't be too long as Serena's already a set and a break up. I can also confirm that Freeview viewers will be lost to second practice at the Turkish Grand Prix at about 1145 BST. You'll be coming back on the Red Button at around 330-1345 BST.

1037: Serena takes the opening set against Goerges and barely appears to have broken sweat. She's lighting up the court, and I'm not just referring to her fluorescent outfit. Super stuff from the American top seed.
Twitter
"HENIN has won her last 18 matches at Roland Garros in straight sets. She has not dropped a set since Round 4 in 2005."
1034: Good news for Rafa fans. The man from Mallorca's gone a break up against Zeballos and he's serving for a 4-1 lead. Serena, meanwhile, has secured the double break for a 5-1 lead. Djokovic and Ferrer are also a break up.
The match is over
1030: The Parisian rain pretty much ravaged day five, meaning a number of matches need to be completed today. The first of those is done and dusted - Polish eighth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski have beaten compatriots Tomasz Bednarek and Mateusz Kowalczyk. Now that was a tongue-twister.
